Estepona

Estepona behoort misschien wel tot de mooiste plekjes van heel Spanje. Dat blijkt ook wel uit de erkenningen van het Ministerie voor Toerisme voor de schoonheid van de stad. Vooral de natuur is prachtig om te aanschouwen. Vooral de rijkelijk beplante boulevard is een genot om tussen te wandelen. Daarnaast valt het ook nog eens op door de gemoedelijke sfeer die de stad altijd heeft weten te behouden.

Estepona may well be one of the most beautiful spots in all of Spain. This is also evident from the recognitions by the Ministry of Tourism for the beauty of the city. The nature, in particular, is stunning to behold. The lushly planted boulevard is especially a delight to stroll along. Additionally, the city stands out for the friendly atmosphere it has always managed to maintain.

Natuurliefhebbers kunnen hier in ieder geval hun ei wel kwijt. In het achterland van Estepona, in de Sierra Bermeja, komt de bijzondere naaldboom Pinsapo voor. Ook worden hier zo nu en dan Capra Hispanica’s gesignaleerd, dit zijn de bekende wilde geiten. 
Voor degene die op zoek is naar bezienswaardigheden kan ook in Estepona terecht. Zo is het landhuis van de acteur Stewart Granger, een Britse acteur uit de jaren 40 t/m 60, in de stad gevestigd. Dit huis staat symbool voor de bouwstijl van de vakantiehuizen aan de Costa del Sol. Estepona bezit ook de eerste onevenredige stierenvechters arena van de wereld. Andere bezienswaardigheden in de stad zijn het Romeinse aquaduct en de Torre del Reloj, een hoge klokkentoren. Verder kent de stad drie musea, ondergebracht in één gezamenlijk pand.

De grootste attractie van de stad is toch wel de vis veiling, die aan het eind van de middag plaatsvindt. De grote kisten vis worden dan op bod verkocht, zoals het ook in Volendam gebruikelijk is. Maar u zult wel begrijpen dat het er hier iets feller aan toe gaat. De mentaliteit van de Spanjaarden is natuurlijk heel anders. Zo zult u hier getuige zijn van een oorverdovend geschreeuw en gefluit en een hoop gebaartjes.

In de haven van Estepona vindt men naast vele restaurantjes ook een touristische zondagmarkt.

Als een soort douanebeambte ligt de Britse kolonie Gibraltar tussen Europa en Afrika ingeklemd. Het zal je daarom niet verbazen dat de lokale cultuur een bonte mix van culturele invloeden is. De meeste bezoekers komen echter voor de natuur en meer bepaald de Rots van Gibraltar, een 426 meter hoge klomp kalksteen die trots boven alles en iedereen uitsteekt. In 1993 werd een groot deel van de rots uitgeroepen tot natuurgebied. 

Nature lovers can certainly find plenty to enjoy here. In the hinterland of Estepona, in the Sierra Bermeja, the unique conifer Pinsapo can be found. Occasionally, Capra Hispanica, the well-known wild goats, are also spotted here.
For those looking for sights, Estepona also has something to offer. The country house of actor Stewart Granger, a British actor from the 1940s to the 1960s, is located in the city. This house symbolizes the architectural style of vacation homes on the Costa del Sol. Estepona is also home to the world's first irregular bullfighting arena. Other attractions in the city include the Roman aqueduct and the Torre del Reloj, a tall clock tower. Additionally, the city has three museums, all housed within a single building.The city's biggest attraction is probably the fish auction, which takes place at the end of the afternoon. The large crates of fish are then sold by bid, as is also customary in Volendam. But you will understand that things are a bit more intense here. The mentality of the Spaniards is of course very different. Here you will witness deafening shouting and whistling and a lot of gesturing.

In the harbor of Estepona, one can find not only many little restaurants but also a tourist Sunday market.

Like a kind of customs officer, the British colony of Gibraltar is sandwiched between Europe and Africa. So it will not surprise you that the local culture is a colorful mix of influences. Most visitors, however, come for the nature, and more specifically, the Rock of Gibraltar, a 426-meter-high block of limestone that proudly stands above everything and everyone. In 1993, a large part of the rock was declared a nature reserve.
